Mary Mitchell is a native to Des Moines, Iowa, where she lives and creates artwork, especially drawings and weavings. She was educated and formally trained at the University of Iowa, Iowa City and Drake University, Des Moines. “My diagnosis as schizophrenic, my assessments, decisions, and perceptions are central to my work. My ability to produce drawings about the nature of surroundings and depictions of the environment is included with drawings that depart from realism. My weavings are planned around using complimentary fabrics and design. Their size makes them appropriate for interior design.” The artist would like to recognize Margaret Kang Shin, her doctor for 12 years. “She practices at Broadlawns Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa and has provided me her care and support in keeping me well.”
